Project WR-519-2010: St. Teresa All Girls’ Boarding School (HOPE Uganda)
A local initiative led by local Ugandan leader, Kyatuheire Jacqueline. Mortgaging her own salary and mobilising local support, she set out to start building a highly needed All Girls’ Boarding School to curb excessively high secondary school drop out rates for the young girls of her area.

The inspiring work of Jacqueline with St. Teresa College was discovered by Daniel Mirabella back in 2008 when he travelled solitary to Uganda for his 21st birthday. Touched by Jacqueline’s efforts to improve the lives of her fellow “sisters”, Daniel setup the charity HOPE Uganda back in Perth in March 2010 to financially assist with the construction of the school.
St. Teresa of the Child Jesus Girls’ College (St. Teresa College) is located in Kihihi Town, Kanungu District, South West Uganda, East Africa. The school is still only half constructed and therefore donations are assisting with not only textbooks and furniture such as desks and chairs but also with infrastructure. The school is non-denominational with a mixed population of over 300 girls with the numbers ever-increasing.
The aim of the school is to empower young women by providing an all-round education for excellence. The school scored 180th out of 2,551 schools nationwide for 2010. With a role model like Jacqueline to look up to it, the school is more than just bricks and mortar. Indeed the girls have been inspired to stay in school, take education seriously and strive for a better future as reflected by their impressive grades.
